Marlene Rainey - OMS, Spain Print E-mail

Marlene left Northern Ireland in 2004 to serve full time at the Pena de Horeb Camp in central Spain. The camp is located in a beautiful setting along the Tajo River, 60 miles east of Madrid near the small village of Sacedon. The camp supports not only the evangelism and discipleship efforts of OMS International, but also those of the entire Spanish evangelical community by hosting children's, youth, and family camps, and retreats for several thousand attendees each year.

Marlene-Rainey-web-267x200.jpg Pena de Horeb means "Rock of Horeb" in English. The name reminds us of how God provided water from a rock at Mount Horeb for the children of Israel when they were in the wilderness.

The camp was established 30 years ago by OMS International as a camp ministry for Madrid and the surrounding area. From very small beginnings of just one building which was kitchen, dining room, meeting area and sleeping accommodation there is now many buildings on the site. These consist of a well-equipped kitchen, dining room, chapel, and two building for campers, one holding having 80 beds and the other 50. There are also houses for staff and volunteers.

About 3000 people pass though the camp in a year. This number can be divided roughly into three groups, about one third young people and children’s camps, one third Spanish church groups and one third groups from the emigrant community (South Americans and Koreans).

Many of the pastors in the Madrid area have been to the camp as young people and can look back on those days as where God first met them and changed there lives.

At present there are two Spanish co-directors living and working at the camp. My main ministry is helping in the kitchen, laundry and any other housekeeping jobs that need to be done. As we are a small team we rely on the help of volunteers from the churches in Madrid, America and the UK. Men for Missions International have played a big part in helping with ongoing maintenance work. We have also had workers from Germany, Holland and South Africa at the camp.

Our prayer is that God will continue to use the camp and make it a blessing to those who come. We want to see lives changed but above all that His name would be Glorified in all that happens at the camp.
