Teenagers (Ann Benton)
At last! A useful, practical book on teenagers that is grounded in scripture. Ann Benton has done us a great service in producing a down to earth, easy to read, no nonsense book on the “terrible teens!” Written in her own amusing style the author draws on the book of Proverbs and illustrates the advice given from her own parenting experience, as well as that of others.
Each chapter begins with some story or observation, which all parents will readily identify with. She explains how most would deal with the real life situation and then draws out from Proverbs how the problem might have been better handled. Everyone will smile and nod their head in agreement, identifying with the scenario described. All of us who have been there and, if truthful, reacted with the same anger and frustration described, will find the solutions given leaving you wondering “why didn’t I think of that?” Discussion questions at the end of each chapter help us to reflect on what we have just read and probe us to helpful self-examination.
As a mother I found the teenager stage presented the biggest parenting challenge. I only wish I had this book at hand. It is extremely helpful and empowering as you realise that you are not alone in struggling with this fraught and difficult stage. This book will help you cope with the challenge that teenagers present. If, like me, you have just come out of the other end of parenting teens you will find it encouraging as you reflect on the challenges and trials you experienced. I would strongly recommend this book for anyone involved with teenagers – parents, grandparents, youth leaders, teachers, and even Pastors!
